Who is the phlebotomy trainer?

Embarking on a gap year from university, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of which career path to pursue. Eager to gain real-world experience, I took a leap of faith and applied for a position as a receptionist in an NHS general practice. Little did I know that this seemingly ordinary decision would open the door to a fulfilling career that I have come to love.

The transition from the academic realm to the bustling environment of a healthcare facility was both exciting and nerve-wracking. As I settled into my role as a receptionist, I quickly realised that this was more than just a job—it was an opportunity to immerse myself in the heart of healthcare and make a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

The fast-paced nature of the NHS general practice provided a dynamic backdrop for my learning journey. Every day brought new challenges and opportunities to expand my skills. From managing appointments to liaising with patients, I discovered the intricate workings of a healthcare system that goes beyond textbooks and lectures.

Seeking a more involved role beyond the frontline, I aimed for increased personal interaction with patients, aspiring to provide more effective assistance. However, I encountered a setback—needle phobia! I was petrified at the sight of a needle. With guidance from a colleague and words of encouragement, I realised that to genuinely aid people, I needed to conquer this fear. This led me to enrol in a phlebotomy course at The Royal London Hospital, marking the start of my journey.

Venturing into the realm of phlebotomy opened numerous doors for me. Job applications became more accessible, and I was fortunate to work with a General Practices, undergoing training in various courses. Progressing from a phlebotomist, I assumed the role of a smoking advisor, distributing nicotine patches and engaging with medical representatives to stay abreast of new products. My phlebotomy journey facilitated the acquisition of additional qualifications, spanning wound care, asthma and COPD, contraception for HCA’s, administration of B12 and flu injection, and more. The opportunities that unfolded were beyond my imagination.

Today, as a phlebotomist trainer, drawing from over 12 years of rich experience in the healthcare industry, I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to contribute to the growth of aspiring individuals who may have once felt uncertain or grappled with fears that held them back. I firmly believe that the only true obstacle one faces is within themselves and this led me to set up thephlebotomytrainer.
